Other issues relevant to peace and security in Africa have become increasingly pertinent for inter-organizational cooperation, such as transnational organized crime, the HIV/AIDSpandemic and climate change.

As a response to the marginalization and vulnerability of the African continent, not only in terms of trade and economic growth, but also in terms of insufficient or inadequate health services (e.g., to address the HIV/AIDs epidemic and high rates of maternal and infant mortality), education, employment opportunities for youth and women’s empowerment, NEPAD was born.

In its HIV/AIDS work (caring for the infected and affected, preventing the spread of the epidemic and protecting the most vulnerable), the Education Sector is joining efforts with the Youth and Gender Units and is participating as well in the promotion of “cultural sensitive” approaches for projects in education.
