We listened with great interest to what the Secretary General of the Economic Community of Central African States had to say.

We have listened with interest to the briefing and have taken note of the Secretary-General’s report (S/2012/128), whose assessments we share.

In this regard once again we note with great interest the proposals made by the representative of the United Nations Correspondents Association and reflected in the latest report of the Ad Hoc Working Group (A/63/959), such as quick delivery of statements to the press; easy access for the media to Assembly meetings; indication of the speakers’ names and titles during video and TV transmissions of meetings; and enhancing the capacity and institutional memory of the Assembly’s Spokesperson section.

We also listened with interest to the statement by Mr. Cazeau, Haiti’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

We look forward with interest to the possibility of Timor-Leste’s joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and we hope that that goal can be achieved by 2012.

Regarding the 1373 Committee, my delegation welcomes with interest the ambitious programme of work announced by the Turkish chairmanship of the Committee, especially measures aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of the obligations pursuant to resolution 1373 (2001) and the continuation of initiatives aimed at promoting the implementation of the resolution through regular thematic discussions and informal briefings with Member States, the most recent of which related to maritime security and acts of terrorism on the high seas.

Last, but not least, the European Union will follow with great interest the 2009 local elections in Timor-Leste as another important milestone in the country’s democratic processes and as a significant indicator of the progress achieved so far in the area of institutional capacity-building and democratic governance, which are both so crucial to ensuring stability and good governance in the country.

We also take note with interest of the efforts made by the African Union to reform its management methods and diversify its sources of funding for peacekeeping operations.

We note with keen interest the provision in article 29 of the statute of the Residual Mechanism requiring defence counsel to “respect the laws and regulations” of the countries to which they are admitted to perform official duties while representing their clients who have been indicted by United Nations Tribunals or by the Residual Mechanism.

We listened with great interest to and are grateful for his important contribution to the debate today.

In anticipation of the report on her country visit, the Government had noted with interest her preliminary conclusions relating to her mandate, and he assured her of Algeria’s determination to continue constructive dialogue and cooperation to follow up on her recommendations for improving housing policy.

He wished to know how countries might best contribute to the Special Rapporteur’s next thematic report.

Accordingly, we have taken note with interest of the suggestions of the group of like-minded States on targeted sanctions — as presented earlier by my colleague from Costa Rica — on how the procedures of the 1267 Sanctions Committee could be improved, in particular in the field of listing, de-listing and strengthening the mandate of the Ombudsperson.

In that context, we note with interest the recent Israeli announcement that it will soon allow regular exports of goods from Gaza.

We followed with interest the briefings by the Chairmen of the Committees in the course of this meeting.

A group of survivors of the nuclear explosions at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been following the deliberations at the Conference with interest; that outcome was not satisfactory to them.

We welcome the Secretary-General’s continued engagement in the fight against impunity for those responsible for acts of piracy, and we are studying with interest his valuable report (S/2010/394) on possible options to further the aim of prosecuting and imprisoning persons responsible for acts of piracy.

We look forward with great interest and anticipation to the steps to be taken and the handling of that matter by the Human Rights Council, including the special mission that it has requested.

My delegation studied with great interest the report of the African Union-United Nations panel on modalities for support to African Union peacekeeping operations.

We will follow with interest the results of that important undertaking.

In this regard, my delegation read with interest the report of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the General Assembly (A/63/959), and should like, in its national capacity, to highlight the injustice that we suffered during the general debate of the sixty-fourth session on 25 September 2009.

We listened with great interest to the statement made by the representative of Ireland on behalf of the New Agenda Coalition.

The Committee also noted with great interest the publication of a communiqué of the African Union Peace and Security Council formalizing its close cooperation with UNREC, whereby it confers upon UNREC responsibilities in the area of African strategy on small arms and light weapons and a role in the implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty.

At the plenary sessions of the International Conference, there was an extensive review and analysis of the situation regarding disarmament and the participation of the States of Central Asia and the Caspian Basin in the relevant agreements and a compelling discussion of the international law framework for disarmament and how it can be enhanced.

In this respect, it is interesting to note the recommendation contained in the panel’s report to establish a system for financial support for peacekeeping operations through AU-assessed contributions.
