Shantou/ˈʃɑːnˈtəʊ/a port in the province of Guangdong in SE China, situated on the South China Sea at the mouth of the Han River; pop. 4,840,500 (est. 2006). It was designated a treaty port in 1869. Former name SWATOW. 汕头（中国东南部广东省南海边港口, 位于韩江口, 2006年估计人口4,840,500,1869年根据条约定为对外通商口岸; 原称 SWATOW）。
