Schliemann
/ˈʃliːmɑːn/- Schliemann, Heinrich (1822-90), German archaeologist. In 1871 he began excavating the mound of Hissarlik on the NE Aegean coast of Turkey, where he discovered the remains of nine superimposed cities, identifying the second oldest as Homer's Troy, although it was later found to be pre-Homeric.
