menstruum
/ˈmenstrʊəm/noun
(pl.menstrua /-strʊə/)
1
- mass noun menses月经。
2
- archaic a solvent〈古〉溶媒, 溶剂。
词源
late Middle English (in sense 1): from Latin, neuter of menstruus 'monthly', from mensis 'month'. Sense 2 is by alchemical analogy of the supposed agency of a solvent in the transmutation of metals into gold with the supposed action of menses on the ovum.
