This lack of water is what created the Taklamakan, an area the size of Germany covered in sand dunes through which the Silk Road traversed.

These methane deposits form a vast  2,000 square-kilometre field made of transverse dunes somewhat resembling those in China's  Taklamakan Desert or California's Death Valley.
