Filter expressions provide a more flexible mechanism for specifying which storage areas to select for a given storage policy.

The procedure uses FEM to create a storage policy with an explicit list of storage areas that are assigned to it.

This technique is described in detail in the Using a storage policy for continuous storage availability section of this article.

In the previous section you explicitly specified which storage areas to use for a particular storage policy.

The Using storage policy filter expressions section later in this article discusses storage policy filter expressions in greater detail.

A storage policy is used as a selection mechanism to determine the storage area in which a document's content is ultimately stored.

Two types of storage farming were described. Examples of storage policy filter expressions were provided.

This section describes how to use a storage policy filter expression to perform specialized selection of a storage area.

Then create a storage policy that evenly distributes documents across these multiple storage areas.

Storage areas that satisfy the expression are associated to this storage policy.

A storage policy has one or more storage areas associated with it.

You can associate storage areas with more than one storage policy.

The P8 administrator can then add more space to that storage area or adjust the storage policy so that a new storage area can be selected.

For example, you might assign a document class's storage policy used for media files to disks with very large capacity.

You can set the storage area and storage policy properties on P8 document classes or on the P8 documents themselves.

This storage policy is then assigned to the base P8 document class.

Although, you have the option of not associating the new storage area with either a new or existing storage policy, this is not recommended.

For example, you could use a storage policy filter to select a storage area based on the maximum size of the storage area.

You can also create a new storage policy when you create a new storage area.

Instead, it is best to only set the storage policy property on a document class.
