The Korean won rose to Won1, 224 per dollar for the first time in six sessions and the benchmark Kospi index closed up 1. 6 per cent.

South Korea's Kospi index dropped 2. 75 per cent to 1, 560. 83, a three-month low.

In South Korea, Seoul's Kospi fell 0. 7 per cent from Monday's 13-month high to end at 1, 601. 38.

In Hong Kong the Hang Seng index was up 1. 3% and South Korea's Kospi rose 0. 3%.

Other Asian stock markets reacted badly with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropping 1. 8pc and South Korea's Kospi sliding 1. 3pc.
