- the name used in Britain for a well-known painting (1650) by Diego Velázquez held at the National Gallery, London. It shows a naked woman lying down and looking in a mirror. In 1914 it was attacked and cut by Mary Richardson, a suffragette, in order to gain publicity for the campaign to allow women to vote.
