Lytton, 1st Baron (1803-73), British novelist, dramatist, and statesman; born Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton. He achieved literary success with Pelham (1828), a novel of fashionable society and also wrote historical romances (such as The Last Days of Pompeii, 1834) and plays. He became an MP in 1831 and later served in many diplomatic roles including Viceroy of India (1876-80).
