Gibbs¹, James (1682-1754), Scottish architect. He developed Wren's ideas for London's city churches, especially in his masterpiece, St Martin's-in-the-Fields (1722-6).

Gibbs², Josiah Willard (1839-1903), American physical chemist. He pioneered chemical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, though his theoretical work was not generally appreciated until after his death.
