Ⅰ (1533-1603), daughter of Henry Ⅷ, queen of England and Ireland 1558-1603. Succeed-ing her Catholic sister Mary Ⅰ, Elizabeth re-established a moderate form of Protestantism as the state religion. Her reign was dominated by the threat of a Catholic restoration and by war with Spain, culminating in the Armada of 1588. Although frequently courted, she never married.
