/tʊəˈneɪ, 〈法〉 tuʀnɛ/- a town in Belgium, on the River Scheldt near the French frontier; pop. 68,193 (2008). From the 9th century it was controlled by the counts of Flanders until taken by France in 1188, returning to the Netherlands in 1814.
