an island in the Gulf of St Lawrence, in eastern Canada, the country's smallest province; pop. 135,851 (2006); capital, Charlottetown. Explored by Jacques Cartier in 1534 and colonized by the French, it was ceded to the British in 1763. It became a province of Canada in 1873.
