Petrie, Sir (William Matthew) Flinders (1853-1942), English archaeologist and Egyptologist. He began excavating the Great Pyramid in 1880. Petrie pioneered the use of mathematical calculation and became the first to establish the system of sequence dating, now standard archaeological practice, by which sites are excavated layer by layer and historical chronology determined by the dating of artefacts found in situ.
