Professor Patrick Chovanec of Beijing's Tsinghua University says trade relations are very tense.

Improving China's languishing logistics network for freight would be a better use of the cash, Mr Chovanec posits.

"Chinese treat homes like gold bars buying multiple units as a store of value, " notes Mr. Chovanec.

"They've taken on a massive amount of debt to build it, " said Patrick Chovanec, who teaches at Tsinghua University.

This offers short-term relief, but Chovanec says such measures won't solve the underlying problem.

I asked Patrick Chovanec, an associate professor at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management in Beijing.

"What the Europeans lack isn't money, what they lack is growth, " said Chovanec.

The reason, says Mr Chovanec, is that Chinese treat flats as "stores of value, like gold" .

Chovanec noted that every week or so there is another anti-dumping finding from one side or the other and sanctions being imposed.
