As a little girl growing up in a poor Ohio neighborhood in the 1940's, Gloria Steinem dreamed of becoming a movie star or a dancer.

"If it took us a century to get identity, it's not surprising that it will take a century to get equality, " said Steinem.

Women today are strong, independent and sexually liberated; Gloria Steinem would be proud if she can be alive till now.

When Gloria Steinem said, in the 1970s, "We're becoming the men we wanted to marry, " I doubt even she realized the prescience of her words.

Gloria Steinem once said a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. That's nonsense.

In recognition of her efforts, Gloria Steinem was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.

There was little gender equality in the early 1960's, when Steinem wrote the article that brought her national attention.

"It will take a century at the rate we're going to get equal pay, " said Steinem.

"Until we have democratic families, we're never going to have true democracy outside the family, " said Steinem.

Gloria Steinem sketched out the vision in a 1970 TIME Essay titled "What It Would Be Like If Women Win. "

Now in her 70s , Steinem refuses to slow down.

Gloria Steinem used this image in the '70s when she streaked her brown hair blond to make herself, and her message, less threatening.

But what Ms Steinem regards as the most "restricting force" in America is nevertheless getting ever less restrictive.

Steinem isn't the person to answer that question.

He is friends with feminist Gloria Steinem.

"More than a third of this march is under 25 years old, " said Steinem at the event.
