Mr. Penn was an unpaid design assistant for Brodovitch in the summers of 1937 and ’38 at Harper’s Bazaar, the most provocative fashion magazine of the day.

Mr. Penn worked for and collaborated with two of the 20th century’s most inventive and infl uential magazine art directors, Alexey Brodovitch and Alexander Liberman.
