On October 25th the Venezuelan subsidiary of Owens-Illinois, an American glass maker, became the 200th business nationalised so far this year.

Owens Illinois was given no advance warning of the measure, and new management entered the factory just a few days after it was announced.

In his speech, Mr Chavez accused Owens Illinois of exploiting its workers and damaging the environment.
