condole/kənˈdəʊl/v. intr. (foll. by 后跟 with) express sympathy with (a person) over a loss, grief, etc. Condole is often confused with console (see CONSOLE1). Condole ‘to express sympathy’ is always followed by with, e.g. They condoled with him over the death of his brother. It is less common than console ‘to comfort’, which is followed by a direct object, e.g. They consoled him after the death of his brother. condole 经常与 console 用混(见 CONSOLE1) 。 They condoled with him over the death of his brother They consoled him after the death of his brother |
