The capital of Manitoba, situated in the south of the province at the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers, to the south of Lake Winnipeg; population 633,451 (2006). First settled as a French trading post in 1738, it became a trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. It grew rapidly after the arrival of the railway in 1881.
