Each of these blocks has a strongly individual character, and the interlaces, though cognate, do not link up, so that it is reasonable to assume that they were separated from each other by a grid of plain tiles or pieces of marble.
Clay plain tiles should be used, walls should be rendered smoothly and no historic timber should be cut.
In addition, I found that a few plain tiles had slipped from the roof-slope onto the flat roof areas and these allowed me to identify that the tiles were manufactured by Hawkins of Cannock from the markings on the underside of the tiles.
These tiles would be interspersed with the slab-rolled tiles created and carved by students and staff, and some plain tiles to keep the tapered section they covered from being too visually overwhelming.
