Early 19th century. FromMoroccan Arabic mallāḥ Jewish quarter, generic use of al-Mallāḥ, lit. ‘the saline area’ (from malaḥa to be salty), the name of the site of Ḥims, a district into which the Jewish community of Fez were compelled to move in 1438.
