Service delivery plans must meet the growing needs for water and sanitation in cities and towns.

The three missions in West Africa, UNOCI, UNMIL and the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Support Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL) as well as the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), continue to work together and cooperate in a number of areas, including: joint border patrols with UNMIL to prevent cross-border movement of irregular armed groups and weapons; organizing joint training programmes between UNOCI and UNMIL, which are also attended by other missions; maintaining a terrestrial microwave connectivity with UNMIL in addition to establishing leased line connectivity to three major cities in Côte d’Ivoire to enhance service quality and speed and achieve savings from unused satellite bandwidth; and the sharing of air assets among the missions.

Citing experience from overseas cities, a member suggested exempting tourist coaches for their operational needs.

With respect to the fight against racism and racial discrimination, UNESCO will continue the implementation of the Integrated Strategy to Combat Racism, Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, including a reinforcement of the Coalition of Cities Against Racism and Discrimination.

During the two transitions period of the coalition Government and the gradual recovery of Yemen, activities of the new IS project phase will be focused on enforcement of control measures for MB and HCFCs, sustain CFCs phase out and curbing illegal trade through the following activities: Enforce the regulation and the legal system to monitor and control HCFCs import and uses; produce awareness materials suitable for the new stage of the ozone activities and the new MP Adjustment; continue public awareness activities with a focus on major cities for the ODSs traders, decision makers, judges, prosecutors and lawyers; monitor on-going phase-out projects and the implemented projects to avoid the any return to the use of CFCs; implement HPMP preparation project in coordination with the implementing agencies; report required data to Ozone and Multilateral Fund Secretariats and related agencies.

In Libya, after the shooting of peaceful demonstrators attending mass protest rallies in several cities, and threats to eliminate political opponents reminiscent of language used by Rwanda’s genocidal Hutu extremists, the Council unanimously voted to refer the unfolding situation in Libya to ICC to deter the potential for widespread slaughter there.

The Spanish founded cities, built forts and spread Christianity and Spanish culture; they also established certain forms of limited “representative” government, known as “cabildos” or municipal governments, which were of great importance in the colony’s political and social life.

While some refugees indeed succeed in improving their lot by such movement, the situation awaiting those who move to cities is, however, frequently harsh and unwelcoming, and the search for solutions often elusive.

(f) An exhibit entitled “Design with the other 90 per cent: cities” (see para. 31 below) was arranged at United Nations Headquarters under the auspices of the initiative, which also arranged a series of panel discussions relating to various themes reflected in the exhibit.

During the exhibition’s stay in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, several high-level events will take place in the respective cities, so as to bring together the high potentials of China and Switzerland, present Switzerland as a top location for science, technology and innovation, and to foster interest in studying in and cooperating with Switzerland.

Major publications currently being prepared include a report on sustainable development to be published in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme for the sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development; the theme study for the sixty-sixth session of the Commission; the report State of the World’s Cities: Trends in Asia and the Pacific, in partnership with UN-Habitat for the World Urban Forum 2010; and the Asian Water Development Outlook 2010 report, to be released by the Asian Development Bank.
