This can be done through, for example, national or international sustainable development awards, such as the European Green Capital Award, given for 2012 to Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city in the Basque country of northern Spain, which puts emphasis on energy efficiency, water conservation, integrated waste management, public transport and civil society engagement.

In 2006, the award had been presented to the activist Ms. Su Su Nway, a Burmese national who had since been arrested by the governing junta and placed in solitary confinement without adequate medical care for her heart condition.

Following the 165th session of the Executive Board (October 2002), at which a number of delegations called for an overall review of UNESCO prizes, the Director-General set up a working group, chaired by the Deputy Director-General, in order to: (i) undertake a comprehensive review of all existing UNESCO prizes across the Organization’s different fields of competence, including their number, nominal value and support costs, financial regulations, periodicity, selection and award procedures, visibility and impact; (ii) propose measures in order to enhance the impact of the existing prizes and rationalize related costs in terms of funds and staff time; and (iii) propose a set of criteria and guidelines for the creation, management and promotion of UNESCO prizes.

A host of concrete proposals were suggested to the coordinators of the Dialogue, such as: dialogue and networking among universities; dialogue among young scientists, involving UNESCO chairholders in dialogue activities; dialogue among student journalists and seasoned media practitioners from both regions; the holding of youth forums; reactivation of the Committee for the Translation of Literary Works and increase in the translation of Arabic works into European languages; a comparative study of school textbooks; dialogue involving professionals from cultural industries; the organization of an interregional conference on the image of Arab-Islamic culture in European history books.

Delegations had also highlighted Ethiopia’s efforts to broaden freedom of expression by issuing licences to a number of press outlets, encouraged the continued expansion of social services, welcomed efforts to reduce child and maternal mortality and supported the food security policy.

To fight against NCDs, my country has taken the following operational measures: the establishment of a cancer registry, in 1992; the ratification of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, in 2005; the adoption by the National Assembly of a law on tobacco control, in 2006; a decree providing free treatment of cancers affecting women, in 2007; campaigns to screen for and treat cancer; the construction, in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency, of a national centre to combat cancer; the adoption by the National Assembly of legislation relating to the creation of an official administrative agency known as the national centre for the fight against cancer; and the drafting of a national strategic plan for the prevention of and the fight against NCDs.
