Kenya also commends His Excellency Mr. Romano Prodi, Chairman of the AU-United Nations panel, and his team for a wonderful report (S/2008/813).

By a letter dated 17 February 2011 (S/2011/77), the Secretary-General informed the Security Council that he had appointed to the Group of Experts, Mr. Nelson Alusala of Kenya (arms), Mr. Ruben de Koning of the Netherlands (natural resources), Mr. Steven Hege of the United States of America (armed groups), Ms. Marie Plamadiala of the Republic of Moldova (Customs and logistics) and Mr. Fred Robarts of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (regional issues and Coordinator).

Plant employees and local artists from Sidney, Ohio; Lebanon, Missouri; Natchitoches, Louisiana; Suzhou, China; Rayong, Thailand; Cookstown, Northern Ireland; Reynosa, Mexico and Welkenraedt, Belgium designed and painted each compressor.

We commend the African Union-United Nations panel, in particular Chairperson Romano Prodi, for presenting to the Council the report on modalities for support to African Union (AU) peacekeeping operations (S/2008/813), now before the Council.

Let me also take this opportunity to welcome to the United Nations His Excellency Mr. Romano Prodi, former Prime Minister of Italy, and to express my appreciation for his leadership of the panel, whose report on modalities for support to African Union peacekeeping operations (S/2008/813) is before the Council today.

The candidates recommended by the Council for appointment as ad litem judge are Ms. Alessandra Greceanu of Romania and Ms. Danielle Grenier of Canada.

At its 2nd meeting, on 29 November, the Conference heard statements by Léo Mérorès (Haiti), President of the Economic and Social Council; Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to the Conference; Trevor Manuel, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to the Conference; Philippe Douste-Blazy, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on Innovative Financing for Development; and Kemal Derviş, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, in his capacity as the Chairman of the United Nations Development Group.

The SPT members were assisted by Mr. Patrice Gillibert (Secretary to the SPT), Ms. Estelle Askew-Renaut, and Ms. Nosy Ramamonjisoa, staff members of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), as well as by three interpreters.

Background: In response to a proposal by the Government of Romania for the establishment of an international centre for advanced training and research in physics in Mǎgurele-Bucarest (Romania) as a category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO, a technical mission was sent to evaluate the feasibility of establishing the proposed centre.

Our appreciation also goes to Mr. Romano Prodi, Chairman of the African Union-United Nations panel on modalities for support to African Union operations, for introducing his important report (S/2008/813), and we hope that he will continue to accompany the process to its logical conclusion.

I would also like to join others in thanking President Romano Prodi for his presentation of the report of the African Union-United Nations panel (S/2008/813) and for his very able leadership in preparing it.
