While those developments are encouraging, much remains to be done to ensure that laws are enforced and that norms constraining the lives of women change.

Laws and policies that prevent and punish violence against women, including harmful traditional norms, along with effective implementation of such laws and policies, are paramount.

94. A sense of commonality about purposes and fundamental values – such as freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature and shared responsibility – is emerging with respect to an overarching framework for dialogue.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland considered that Saudi Arabia could do more in leading society away from cultural practices such as the marriage of young children, and in promoting women’s rights.

Please also indicate whether any gender-based assessment of the impact of legislation and policies has been undertaken to overcome traditional cultural stereotypes.

While noting the efforts of the State party, including the establishment in June 2006 of the Interdepartmental Commission on Equality between Men and Women and the adoption of the National Strategy on Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women in the Russian Federation, the Committee reiterates its concerns about gender inequality in the State party, particularly with regard to participation in political and public life, which is perpetuated by harmful traditions and stereotypes about the lesser role of women in the State party (art. 3).

Gender stereotyping in the content of skills training was successfully challenged by encouraging girls to take up skills in traditionally male-dominated domains (e.g. electronics, automotive repair, agriculture, etc.).

Argentina made reference to information provided by CEDAW on deep seated patriarchal and cultural stereotypes in relation to the roles of men and women in the family and the society in Mauritius as well as in the labour market.

In that context, it calls upon States to promote the empowerment of girls and women in their national policies, and to take measures to eliminate harmful customs and traditional practices and to counter cultural stereotypes, which can lead to trafficking in persons.
