The concrete tools being developed by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations to help mainstream gender perspectives into the daily work of all mission components should help to meet these needs.

The United Nations Geographic Information Working Group (UNGIWG) (www.ungiwg.org), an ad hoc inter-agency coordination group of geo-spatial professionals representing more than 30 Secretariat departments, funds, programmes and specialized agencies of the United Nations system, was established in 2000 to address technical coordination, geographic data-sharing, reduction of duplication and joint efforts in the context of all types of geospatial data use and development.

In paragraph 63 of his report (A/64/380), the Secretary-General provides information on a number of related initiatives being implemented concurrently with ERP within the United Nations Secretariat and missions, including: IPSAS implementation, the talent management system (recruitment and staffing), Lean Six Sigma (non-systems process improvement), enterprise content management and customer relationship management, as well as a fuel management system and a rations management system for peacekeeping functions.

Essentially, the strategic concept provides for the following: an increase in the level of United Nationssupported AMISOM uniformed personnel from 12,000 to 17,731, including 5,700 from the new troopcontributing countries, a Djiboutian contingent and the rehatted Kenyan troops, as well as an AMISOM police component; the deployment by Burundi and Uganda of additional troops to reach the current United Nationsauthorized strength of 12,000; the extension of AMISOM’s area of responsibility, including the insertion of AMISOM troops in the areas liberated with the support of Ethiopia; the provision of the required force enablers and multipliers, as well as logistical support to other components of AMISOM; and, last but not least, enhancement of the TFG security and allied forces, so as to enable and empower them to play an increased role in the implementation of the strategic concept.

While the human rights component of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) is engaged in the Sudan working with institutions on the process of elections aiming at fairness and transparency, the Board noted that it was important for OHCHR to make a meaningful contribution in the context of the referendum process by preparing a plan of action for intervention on the various possible outcomes even though the human rights component of the integrated mission may have a contingency plan.
