The State of Honduras has made significant progress in implementing the judgements of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, having recognized its international responsibility for the homicide of environmentalist Blanca Jeannette Kawas Fernández on 6 February 1995 in a public ceremony on 10 June 2010, at which the Head of the Government apologized to the Kawas family and Honduran society and acknowledged the unflinching struggle waged by the late environmentalist, her constant advocacy of protection and conservation of the environment and the establishment of the Punta Sal National Park in Tela in the department of Atlántida.

The UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro has estimated that 31 were killed while the Democratic Voice of Burma puts the number at 138, basing its figure on a list compiled by the 88 Student Generation group in Myanmar.
