Such unreasonable double standards are possible at the Security Council because such standards are in line with the interests of those countries keen to monopolize such cutting-edge technology as satellite launches.

Likewise, the challenge of terrorism demands the broadest possible coalition of nations to put an end to it — not only through sheer force of arms but also and mainly through a dialogue of faiths, cultures and civilizations that will put the merchants of hate out of business.

Although the number of successful acts of piracy has decreased significantly owing to the specific measures taken, it is nevertheless worrying to note that there are still many instances of pirate attacks and hostage-taking, and that those now extend beyond Somalia’s coasts.

Improving performance requires a transition from a reactive mode to a proactive mode, notably by trying to address the root causes of oppression and poverty-induced conflicts, and preventing aggressor States from achieving their covetous designs on the territories and resources of others.

The increase has been driven in part by the remarkable success rate of Somali piracy in 2008 (38 per cent of all ships attacked were hijacked), its high profitability and relatively low risks.

The confiscation of the land, which belongs to Palestinians from the villages of Khader, Beit Fajar, Irtas, Um Salamonah, Idrahal and the city of Bethlehem, which is located just west of the “Efrat” settlement, would effectively complete Israel’s attempts to sever the West Bank into two separate, disconnected parts.

The declining successof Somali pirate operations at sea may have contributed to more frequent incidents of kidnap for ransom on land, a trend that accelerated in September 2011, as foreign tourists, aid workers and a journalist were abducted in Kenya and Somalia before being transferred to the custody of Somali pirates (see annex 4.2.).

In that regard the Kosovo police and EULEX must continue their work and use the resources at their disposal to ensure that those who would use violence or the threat of violence do not succeed in destabilizing the region.

The bombings in Damascus and Aleppo and the ongoing destruction by terrorist organizations of the country’s infrastructure, which the Syrian people built with tremendous effort, clearly demonstrate that, despite the money and arms they have received and their recruitment of terrorists trained in several countries, those organizations have failed to achieve their aimsbecause of the steadfastness of Syria and its people, who uncovered the scope of the conspiracy and proceeded with incomparable resolve to restore security and stability throughout the country.

Raising awareness about the danger that their ideas pose to our diverse cultural heritages and civilizations is one of best ways to ensure that they will not succeed in their efforts to foster clashes among nations.
