At its sixty-fifth session, the General Assembly welcomed the adoption and the ongoing ratification of the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa, expressed its appreciation, in the year which marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Office of the High Commissioner, for the leadership shown by the Office, and commended the Office for its ongoing efforts, with the support of the international community, to assist African countries of asylum, and urged the international community, in the spirit of international solidarity and burden-sharing, to continue to fund generously the refugee programmes of the Office, taking into account the substantially increased needs of programmes in Africa (resolution 65/193).

As the importance of South-South cooperation, as a complement to North-South cooperation, has grown enormously in recent years, we find it timely for the General Assembly to consider constructively what has been achieved so far, the lessons learned and what recommendations can be made for future action.

The spread of tuberculosis in the Republic of Moldova reached epidemic proportions in the 1990s, amid a socio-economic crisis and inadequate financing of the health-care system, a shortage of anti-tuberculosis medicines from 1997-2000 and migration.

Today’s Security Council debate is taking place at an important moment in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because it coincides with the anniversary of the admission of the country to the United Nations.

This moment is all the more special as it comes at a time when the Democratic Republic of the Congo is preparing to hold general elections, the second since those of 2006.

The present report, mandated by General Assembly resolution A/65/284, coincides with the tenth anniversary of the adoption by African leaders of the flagship programme of the African Union, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

It is very important that the process of analysing the early results of the Council’s work should begin now, in the year of the sixtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, when all of us are thinking about how to make the United Nations human rights mechanism more effective and responsive to the needs of all the peoples of the world and all individuals.

We are excited to be part of this event to primarily reset the engine, energize commitments and redirect the global agenda towards the ultimate realization of the MDGs by 2015.

This year marks the upcoming 25th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest and the 60th Macau Grand Prix. (a) Authored a chapter on intergenerational programmes and social inclusion of the elderly for a book published in English and Spanish, in 2007, in Spain; and (b) provided many international NGOs with technical assistance on ageing, including a conference in June 2006, in Melbourne, Australia; a conference, in August 2006, in Tokyo, coinciding with the launch of the Japan Intergenerational Unity Network; a symposium in June 2007, in St. Julian’s, Malta; and a conference in May 2008, in Hamburg, Germany.

On behalf of the Group of 77 and China, I have the pleasure to write to you, in your capacity as President of the Security Council for the month of July, to present the concern of the Group regarding the open debate entitled “Maintenance of international peace and security: impact of climate change”, scheduled for Wednesday, 20 July 2011.

The theme of the Committee’s tenth session came at an opportune time when the recession, with rising food prices, unemployment and a decline in social services, are posing special challenges to effective governance and State legitimacy.
