The programme aims to help young people understand and address the impact of global warming, while also encouraging changes in attitudes and behaviour needed to put the world on a more sustainable development path.

Initiatives were also announced to enhance human and social development and support mitigation and adaptation efforts of least developed countries with regard to climate change.

This cannot be understood other than as constituting a clear Israeli decision to remain on the path of occupation, settlements and colonization rather than the path of peace, based on United Nations resolutions, the land for peace principle at the core of the Madrid terms of reference, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Quartet road map, the basis for peace repeatedly reaffirmed and consensually supported by the international community.

At the same time, we duly note that many developing countries continue to face serious development challenges and that many of them are not on track to achieve the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals.

With three months of the transition remaining, the political leadership in Somalia, with the support of the international community, must take full advantage of the opportunities in the political and security sphere in placing the country on a trajectory of sustained peace, stability and long-term development.

During their visit, the Working Group found that the challenges faced by people of African descent in Portugal related mainly to their lack of recognition as a specific group in the national policy and legal framework; the lack of recognition of their positive contribution throughout history to the construction and development of the country; the lack of qualitative and quantitative disaggregated data by racial or ethnic origin; the existence of a circle of poverty, unequal access to education, public services, employment, as well as discrimination in the administration and functioning of the justice system; existence of racial profiling and police violence; underrepresentation in political and institutional decision-making processes, as well as the lack of special measures or affirmative action policies in Portugal for people of African descent or other minorities.

UNESCO’s contribution in providing guidelines and technical support to Member States in this sector in general, and in the Guarani in particular, must be aimed to promote and improve the integrated management of the water resources as a mechanism to dissipate or prevent social conflict.
