In September 2006, UNESCO fielded an international expert mission, headed by Mr Bouchenaki, Dir. ICCROM, to assess the potential damage of the conflict on World Heritage sites in Lebanon (Byblos, Tyre, Baalbek and Anjar), as well as Saida and Echmoun which are on the Tentative List.

On the other hand, although unable to reach a decision on the Ahtisaari report, referred to it in March 2007, the Council nevertheless encouraged attempts at mediation between the Parties, in particular when it decided to send a mission, made up of members of the Council and led by Johan C. Verbeke, representative of Belgium, to Belgrade and Pristina, in April 2007 (S/2007/220 of 20 April 2007), and when it supported the attempts by the troika (made up of the European Union, United States and Russia) created by the Contact Group to reconcile the two Parties (from July to December 2007).

It should be recalled that in their recent presentations to the Council (see S/PV.6710), Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani, Chairman of the current session of the Ministerial Council of the League of Arab States, and Mr. Nabil Elaraby, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, made a clear and urgent request for the Council’s support of the regional organization’s bold, decisive and comprehensive initiative based on dialogue, mutual understanding and national reconciliation, aimed at achieving a peaceful solution for a situation that has only continued to worsen with time.

The Dominican Republic welcomes the presence of His Excellency Mr. Jean-Max Bellerive, Prime Minister of Haiti, and expresses its gratitude for the comprehensive briefing given by our friend, Ambassador Edmund Mullet, Special Representative of the Secretary-General, who also introduced the highly valuable report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) (S/2010/200).

Bombardments and fighting in Jebel Moon and Jebel Marra since early 2010 have reportedly claimed the lives or caused the displacement of civilians.
