Fish stocks in these areas have reduced significantly, creating food scarcity and insecurity for communities who depend on fish as a main source of food, as well as a means of livelihood.

The majority of the inhabitants of small island developing States live in or near coastal areas (e.g., 80 per cent of Pacific islanders), and many rely on the coral reef for their livelihood.

States shall, according to article 8, paragraph 2, provide effective mechanisms for prevention of “any action which has the aim or effect of dispossessing them of their lands, territories or resources”; article 20, paragraph 1, states that indigenous peoples have the right to be secure in “the enjoyment of their own means of subsistence and development” and to engage freely in “all their traditional and other economic activities”; while article 26, paragraph 2, establishes the right for indigenous peoples to own, use, develop and control “lands, territories and resources that they possess by reason of traditional ownership or other traditional occupation or use”.

Limited employment and livelihood opportunities, particularly among youth, remained major factors affecting security, while serious crime and other illegal activities are still prevalent.

The Security Council reiterates that the core objectives of the international community and all stakeholders in the Sudan and South Sudan are the peaceful coexistence of two fully viable States, embracing democratic governance, rule of law, accountability, equality, respect for human rights, justice and economic development, in particular the establishment of the conditions for conflict-affected communities to build strong and sustainable livelihoods.

The Government of the United States and the indigenous peoples concerned are urged to review the language of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act in order to ensure its consistency with that of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, specifically in relation to: the right of indigenous peoples to self-determination, particularly to maintain and develop their political, economic and social systems or institutions of self-government; to determine their own identity or membership in accordance with their customs and to be secure in the enjoyment of their own means of subsistence and development, or for just and fair redress for its impairment; to denounce the policy of “extinguishment” of Alaska Native aboriginal hunting and fishing rights; and to address the outstanding issue of transfer of lands to traditional institutions of the Alaska Native people.

The central issue for agencies is supporting these new livelihoods rather than trying to recreate previous livelihoods.

The urban setting for the older migrant in developing countries and countries with economies in transition is often one of crowded housing, poverty, loss of economic autonomy and little physical and social care from family members who must earn their living outside the home.

Recordings copied without the artist’s consent also do not provide any income to the artist. If an artist cannot earn income from his interpretations, he will have to make a living with another job and may therefore perform and record fewer works for us to enjoy.

This article recognizes the right of persons with disabilities to work and to gain a living in a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible, including in the case of those who acquire a disability during the course of employment.

However, the evaluation identified some positive results — life skills training for teachers and counselors was instrumental in upgrading their skills on active learning methods and for understanding the psychosocial environment in which Iraqi children were living, and standards were established for supplies and school rehabilitation.

To ensure refugees maintained access to assistance and services, UNHCR introduced new measures, including more strongly involving refugee communities in the day-to-day running of the camps; enhancing communication with different groups among the refugee population; providing training, mentoring and capacity building for refugee workers and volunteers; monitoring the health of the refugee population; improving water and sanitation facilities; and exploring livelihood possibilities for refugee youth by enhancing their skills and work experience.

At the present time, developing countries have a large number of persons reaching old age with minimal literacy and numeracy, which limits their capacity to earn a livelihood and may thus influence their enjoyment of health and well-being.

While most camps are now reportedly vacant, many former occupants are believed to have settled near the park, where they have few alternative livelihood options, which could undermine the sustainability of the action.

Agencies need to consider the complexity of livelihood strategies, and that interventions may be needed on a number of levels, and not just at the level of ownaccount producers, to restore destroyed livelihoods.
