The gross violations of human rights in the Palestinian and other Arab territories were caused primarily by the Israeli occupation and included killings, arbitrary detention, confiscation and destruction of property, disruption of economic activity, prevention of access to work, education and health care, and restrictions on freedom of movement.

In Palembang, South Sumatra in 2008, a fugitive Singaporean member of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) recruited members of an anti-apostasy group called FAKTA by first persuading them that murder, rather than non-violent advocacy, was the only way to stop Christian proselytisation.

Although the overall scope of the violations against children remains unknown for these reasons, reported and verified incidents indicate that there has been no major improvement compared to the last reporting period, especially regarding the recruitment and use of children, rape and other sexual violence, killing and maiming and the denial of humanitarian access.

In that regard, we reiterate our support for the resolutions adopted at the recent summit of the League of Arab States in Baghdad, which condemned the Syrian Government’s serious violations of Syrian civilians’ human rights and called on it to immediately end all killing and acts of violence; to protect civilians; to ensure their freedom to demonstrate peacefully; to immediately release all those detained during such events; to withdraw its military forces and other armed presence from all cities and villages and to allow immediate access to Arab and international relief organizations.

After all this, there still seems an insufficient sense of urgency among the governments and parties that could put a stop to the cruelty and carnage in Syria.

Cases of direct killing and extrajudicial execution by law enforcement agencies, or by armed groups connected to the de facto authority in the Gaza Strip, targeting persons accused of committing certain acts or sentenced by the military and civil courts have been noted, as have cases of civilians being detained and then eliminated, after interrogation, by the agencies of the de facto authority in the Gaza Strip.

(c) Calling upon the Transitional Federal Government to actively seek to identify and release unconditionally all children associated with its armed forces and its allied militias and to continue to engage in dialogue with the United Nations towards the preparation and implementation of an action plan to halt the recruitment, use, killing and maiming of children, in contravention of applicable international law, as well as the perpetration of rape and other forms of sexual violence against children, in accordance with Security Council resolutions 1539 (2004), 1612 (2005) and 1882 (2009)
