Numerous collaborative projects and activities have been conducted over the years under the Plans of Action, including: cooperation during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic; cooperation in infectious disease surveillance, control; laboratories; seminars/workshops on emerging infectious disease and chronic disease prevention and control; high level meetings and workshops on drugs and medical products, food, and consumer product safety; health human resource exchanges and trainings; a project on health policy evaluation; joint health research funding, projects and scholarships; and professional exchanges and workshops in health systems, public health, health promotion, chronic disease prevention and control, laboratories, hospital system and management.

At the same session, the General Assembly invited Member States to provide their suggestions in relation to the overall theme, the agenda items and the topics for the workshops of the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, and requested the Secretary-General to report to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its twenty-first session on the suggestions made by Member States; recommended that, in order to strengthen the outcome of future crime congresses, the number of their agenda items and workshops be limited, and encouraged the holding of side events that are focused on, and complement, the agenda items and workshops; and requested the Commission to approve at its twenty-first session the overall theme, the agenda items and the topics for the workshops of the Thirteenth Congress (resolution 66/179).

The main activities to be implemented are: coordination with all stakeholders; preparation/review of terms of reference for consultancy services; preparation, implementation and review of annual implementation plans and relevant progress reports as may be required; financial management to ensure effective use of resources; facilitating project supervision, or evaluation and performance verification as required; organizing meetings and workshops to ensure full cooperation of all stakeholders; and supervision and evaluation of conversion projects with assistance from technical experts.

An amount of $152,000 is proposed for travel to participate in: peacekeepingrelated seminars, conferences, workshops and coordination meetings with World Bank officials in order to exchange on lessons learned on disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, the annual Inter-Agency Working Group on Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration, which seeks to coordinate and harmonize the efforts of all United Nations actors on disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, and coordination meetings with African Union officials in Addis Ababa ($29,400); the Secretary-General’s annual retreat and a workshop at the Kofi Annan Training Centre in Accra ($22,700); seminar and workshops related to the different aspects of the police involvement in peacekeeping, support to national authorities and international policing ($92,300); and the annual meeting on juvenile justice ($7,600).

The objectives of this project include creating a regular dialogue with relevant Africa-based stakeholders to discuss research findings and activities in the context of the Least Developed Countries Report and Economic Development in Africa Report, through joint training seminars and workshops for local and regional African stakeholders.

Training, seminars and workshops are routinely conducted for members of the Gambia Police Force and Prison Services on juvenile justice administration and on international conventions such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the above-named instruments on the protection of prisoners.

The Committee agreed that CAPSA should promote efforts to diversify venues for its seminars and workshops in countries throughout the region and suggested that CAPSA address capacity-building for those engaged in agricultural research, policy analysis and marketing.

The view was expressed that holding CAPSA seminars and workshops in countries throughout the region would serve to enhance the sense of ownership.

(b) Many training sessions and workshops have considered the status of and proposed solutions to central issues, including the management of recyclable and reusable solid waste; modern trends in the management of waste that causes environmental pollution; the economic and environmental benefits of recycling industrial waste; the treatment of wastewater; recycling plastic waste; and the environmentally safe management of electronic and electrical waste.

The dialogue between the OSPAR Commission and the Authority also took place informally by participation in meetings and workshops relating to the environmental management plan in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone or on the management of selected areas in areas beyond national jurisdiction in the North-East Atlantic.

Some members expressed their wish that the Trust Fund be also used to assist other activities of importance at the regional level, including capacity building, training and workshops, with particular reference to the strengthening of Codex Contact Points and National Codex Committees.

This notwithstanding, it must be noted that the Customs and Immigration Departments and the civil aviation authorities take part on a regular basis in seminars and workshops, some of which are coordinated by the United States Government, for the improvement of border controls and the training of customs, immigration and civil aviation officers on securing the airport and other ports of entry against threats of terrorism.

(b) Development of a World Heritage Education programme, the target group of which are 12-16 years old students, within the framework of the UNESCO Special Project “Young People’s Participation in World Heritage Preservation and Promotion”, through workshops diffusing already available materials: the practical manual Introducing Young People to Heritage Site Management and Protection (adapting an activity initiated in 2002 in Petra by UNESCO and ICCROM to the case of Jerusalem) and the World Heritage in Young Hands Kit in Jerusalem secondary schools.

Two of the 4 general temporary assistance positions, 1 P-4 and 1 P-3 Training Officers, and 1 P-4 continuing post, currently funded from the support account, design, deliver, upgrade, harmonize and evaluate three ongoing cross-cutting leadership programmes: the senior mission leaders’ programme, a two-week course, conducted twice annually at a host Member State, for 26 candidates from Member States, the Secretariat, the United Nations agencies, programmes and funds); the senior leaders’ programme, a compulsory orientation course for all mission personnel at the D-2 level and above, conducted twice annually in New York; and SMART, an intensive year-long programme involving distance learning and three week-long workshops for two groups of 40 candidates.
