At its seventy-first session, the Commission considered a document containing the elements of an updated performance management framework that included, inter alia, proposals for recognition, incentives and rewards.

The Committee for the United Nations PopulationAward selected the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development in recognition of its pioneering achievements in: (a) developing the role of parliaments in the Asia and the Pacific region to achieve the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development through national parliamentary committees on population and development, which have become a worldwide model; (b) contributing to the establishment of regional parliamentary forums in Africa and Europe; (c) promoting parliamentary action on population and development issues by facilitating dialogue within and among parliaments; and (d) strengthening the knowledge and capacity of parliamentarians to advocate, initiate and adopt legislation on population and development, reproductive health, family planning, HIV and AIDS, poverty, youth issues, gender equality and the elimination of violence against women.

The most effective solutions must include recognition of the identity of the constituent ethnic nationalities, social awareness and recognition of the contributions of the ethnic groups, investigation and analyses of the situation of the groups, inclusion of all groups on an equal basis in the process of nation-building, training for public servants and law enforcement personnel on the specific needs of the different ethnic groups, combating racism and racial discrimination in the media and public places and promotion of citizen participation in governance.

To encourage journalists to write about the UNDDD, major international broadcasting corporations and journalists’ associations will be approached as partners to establish an annualaward inhonour of the journalist who writes best on deserts and drylands ecosystem issues.
