In response to the sustainable development challenges in Africa identified in the 2005 World Summit Outcome, the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (“Johannesburg Plan of Implementation”) and the NEPAD framework, the strategy of the subprogramme will continue to emphasize policies and strategies for structural agricultural transformation and food security within a perspective of regional cooperation and integration, with a particular focus on land, water, forests, urban-rural linkages and human settlements and climate change.

At its sixty-sixth session, the General Assembly decided to convene in 2016, in line with the bi-decennial cycle (1976, 1996 and 2016), a third United Nations conference on housing and sustainable urban development (Habitat III) to reinvigorate the global commitment to sustainable urbanization that should focus on the implementation of a “New Urban Agenda”, which should build on the Habitat Agenda, the Declaration on Cities and Other Human Settlements in the New Millennium and the relevant internationally agreed development goals, including those contained in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, and the outcomes of other major United Nations conferences and summits, and requested the Secretary-General to submit to the Assembly, at its sixty-seventh session, a report on the implementation of the resolution (resolution 66/207).

The following institutional and private foundations have provided funding in recent years: Adessium Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Elders Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Humanity United, Henry Luce Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Oak Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Ploughshares Fund, Radcliffe Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Stanley Foundation, The Charitable Foundation, Tinker Foundation Incorporated.

The project is focused on the development of an international plasma research and education centre for developing countries in the Asian and African regions, and of a network of benchmark scientific-educational laboratories in developing countries for cooperation with world centres of excellence in plasma physics such as MITP and IHED in the Russian Federation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University in the United States of America, Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, Johannesburg University in South Africa, Pisa University in Italy, and international research centres, such as CERN in Geneva (Switzerland) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna (Russian Federation).

The Secretary-General, in consultation with the Committee, appointed Duk Ho Moon, Republic of Korea (proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, to replace David J. Birch, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, who had resigned effective 20 December 2010) on 22 February 2011; John Everard, United Kingdom (regional issues), on 21 March 2011; and William Newcomb, United States of America (finance) and Katsuhisa Furukawa, Japan (nuclear issues), on 22 August 2011.

The Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (“Johannesburg Plan of Implementation”)1 and the decisions of the eleventh session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (see E/2003/29) called for strengthened involvement and enhanced participation of major groups in the activities of the Commission as well as in the implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.

Against this background, I feel that we should all commend President Koroma and his Liberian counterpart, President Johnson-Sirleaf for their careful approach in support of the democratic transition in their fellow neighbouring country.

Severus intended to practise in his own country, but he first visited the shrine of St. Leontius of Tripolis, the head of St. John Baptist at Emea, and then the holy places of Jerusalem, with the result that he joined Evagrius who was already a monk at Maïuma, the great austerities there did not suffice for Severus, and he preferred the life of a solitary in the desert of Eleutheropolis.

Actions for climate change mitigation and adaptation and environmental sustainability will be based on least developed country-specific objectives defined in Agenda 21, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and Millennium Development Goal 7, as well as commitments from multilateral environmental agreements.

A curious chapter gives the Prologue of Moro, or Mara, Bishop of Amida (a Syriac writer whose works appear to have been lost), to his edition of the four Gospels in Greek, to which the writers appends as a curiosity the pericope of the woman taken in adultery (John 8) which Moro had inserted in the 89th canon; "it is not founded in other manuscripts" Book VIII, iii, gives the letter of Simeon of Beit-Arsham on the martyrs of Yemen, perhaps an apocryphal document.

Various approaches and tools for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity are referred to in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, including the application of an ecosystem approach by 2010 (para. 30 (d)), the establishment of marine protected areas consistent with international law and based on scientific information, including representative networks by 2012, and the development of national, regional and international programmes for halting the loss of marine biodiversity (para. 32 (c) and (d)).

Such support was provided, inter alia, to (a) SADC Economic Partnership Agreement Working Group on Services and Investment (Johannesburg, 10–14 May); (b) COMESA Second Meeting of the Committee on Trade in Services (Harare, 19–21 May); (c) Training Workshop on Trade in Services in collaboration with Botswana Ministry of Trade and Industry (Gaborone, 31 May – 4 June); (d) SADC Trade in Services Regional Workshop for Sectoral Technical Experts (Johannesburg, 7–9 June); (e) Fifteenth Meeting of the SADC Trade Negotiating Forum – Services (Johannesburg, 10 June); (f) SADC Economic Partnership Agreement Technical Working Group on Services and Investment (Gaborone, 30 August–3 September).

Presentations were made by the following panellists: Hany Dimian, Deputy Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee and Deputy Finance Minister of Egypt; John Eatwell, Professor, University of Cambridge; Adib Mayaleh, Chair of the Group of 24, Governor of the Central Bank of Syria; Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid; Joakim Stymne, State Secretary, International Development Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden; and Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Conference.

With 136 international trademark applications, Novartis (Switzerland) was the largest filer in 2009 followed by Lidl (Germany), Henkel (Germany), Zhejiang Medicine Company (China), Shimano (Japan), KRKA (Slovenia), Richter Gedeon (Hungary), L’Oréal (France), BSH Bosch und Siemens (Germany), Egis Gyógyszergyár (Hungary), Pfizer (Switzerland), Janssen Pharmaceutica (Belgium), Bayer (Germany), Glaxo Group (UK), Boehringer Ingelheim (Germany), Nestlé (Switzerland), Sanofi Aventis (France), Callaway Golf Company (USA) and Siemens (Germany).

Specifically, indigenous peoples are concerned about the fact that eight years after the Johannesburg summit and more than two years after adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the mining industry — especially through its industry body, the International Council on Mining and Metals, major companies and project financiers, such as the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and the “Equator banks” — has failed to take action to recognize the Declaration as the minimum international standard relating to indigenous peoples’ rights.

Following the participation of IFAD in the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, the Fund started working proactively on advocacy with indigenous peoples, beyond the confines of its projects and within the wider framework of the international arena, establishing a strong partnership with the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples’ Issues and the United Nations Inter-Agency Support Group (IASG) supporting the Forum.

At the 4th meeting, on 12 April, the keynote speaker, Amy Tsui, Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health, addressed the Commission on the theme “Improving family planning services to achieve universal reproductive health” and responded to questions raised by the representatives of Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kenya, Malaysia, the United States of America and the Netherlands and by the observers for Norway, Denmark and the Gambia.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 in Johannesburg, in paragraph 23 (c) of its Plan of Implementation,6 encouraged countries to implement the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals as soon as possible with a view to having the system fully operational by 2008.

We reiterate our commitment, expressed in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, the 2005 World Summit Outcome and the outcome document of the High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals of 2010, to take further effective measures and actions, in conformity with international law, to remove the obstacles to the full realization of the right of self-determination of peoples living under colonial and foreign occupation, which continue to adversely affect their economic and social development as well as their environment, are incompatible with the dignity and worth of the human person and must be combated and eliminated.

With respect to future activities on water resources management and references to the proposal to establish a council of ministers on water security for Asia and the Pacific, the Committee was informed that the secretariat would limit the scope of such activities to sustainable planning and water resources in accordance with Commission resolution 64/1 on the restructuring of the conference structure of the Commission, as well as the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation with regard to integrated water resources management.

At the 26th meeting, on 17 March 2009, the Chairperson of the expert mechanism on the rights of indigenous peoples, John Bernhard Henriksen, introduced the report on the first session of the mechanism on the rights of indigenous peoples held on 1-3 October 2008 (A/HRC/10/56).

The capacities and willingness for cooperation of privately operated R&R centres in the regions or in neighbouring countries, like one modern and well equipped centre near the Gulf coast in Saudi Arabia and another modest one in Johannesburg/RSA or recycling facilities in the USA for Caribbean countries were not systematically explored, neither in the initial planning nor in the re-orientation phase.

(c) In addition, the Task Team for Africa and the African experts, in collaboration with the Chair, the Vice-Chair of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names and representatives of the Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union, took the opportunity to participate in the Workshop on the Standardization of Geographical Names, held by the South African Department of Arts and Cultures in April 2012 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to review and discuss again the Gaborone Action Plan, especially regarding the financial difficulties that may impede its implementation.

Afterward, the boys are confronted by NormanXCHARXs estranged and seemingly deranged uncle Mr. Prenderghast (John Goodman) who tells his nephew that the vision is a sign that he soon must take up his regular ritual to protect the town.

Bearing in mind the commitment made by the international community to fully achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and stressing, in that context, the resolve of Heads of State and Government, as expressed in the United Nations Millennium Declaration,17 to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people who are unable to reach or afford safe drinking water and, as agreed in the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (“Johannesburg Plan of Implementation”),18 to halve the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation

As President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia said to us in our discussions: “After we have had a civil war, you guys provide us with all the assistance; but when we are trying to prevent it, there is very little that the international community is able to do to help”.
