The United Nations Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development demonstrated that the Group of 192, as it has been called by my brother, Father Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, has a voice in world economic matters.

The Commission welcomed the confirmation given by the Russian Federation that it would host the Asian and Pacific Energy Forum at the ministerial level in May 2013 in Vladivostok.

Recalling also that, at the 7th meeting of its fifth session, the Committee designated Chinsung Chung, Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, Wolfgang Stefan Heinz and Mona Zulficar as members of the drafting group, which subsequently elected Ms. Zulficar as chairperson and Mr. Heinz as rapporteur, and that Shigeki Sakamoto and Latif Hüseynov joined the drafting group at the sixth session of the Committee

Owing to the absence of Mr. d’Escoto Brockmann, Mr. Bengoa was elected Rapporteur of the sixth session by acclamation.

The first thing we wish to recognize is that Mr. Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann gave such weight to the fact that all countries have the same right to be heard and heeded that the term that he correctly coined — the Group of 192, or G-192 — can now be heard in all quarters.

They were joined as Commissioners by thirteen eminent and outstanding individuals from around the world, including former heads of state and ministers, military strategists and disarmament experts, all uniquely placed to bring fresh and imaginative vision to the undertaking: Turki Al Faisal (Saudi Arabia), Alexei Arbatov (Russian Federation), Gro Harlem Brundtland (Norway), Frene Noshir Ginwala (South Africa), François Heisbourg (France), Jehangir Karamat (Pakistan), Brajesh Mishra (India), Klaus Naumann (Germany), William Perry (United States), Wang Yingfan (China), Shirley Williams (United Kingdom), Wiryono Sastrohandoyo (Indonesia, replacing the late Ali Alatas) and Ernesto Zedillo (Mexico).

I would like to pay tribute to the important work of your predecessor Mr. Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann.
