At its sixty-sixth session, the General Assembly invited all organizations of the United Nations system and other multilateral organizations, including the Bretton Woods institutions and international and regional financial institutions, to contribute to the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action and to integrate it into their programmes of work, requested the Secretary-General to take the steps necessary to undertake a joint gap and capacity analysis on a priority basis by 2013 with the aim of establishing a technology bank and science, technology and innovation supporting mechanism dedicated to least developed countries, and requested the President of the Assembly to establish an ad hoc working group to further study and strengthen the smooth transition process for the countries graduating from the least developed country category and to submit a report to the Assembly at its sixty-seventh session with specific recommendations.

In recognition thereof, the General Assembly decided, in its resolution 65/123, to engage more systematically with IPU in integrating a parliamentary component of, and contribution to, major United Nations deliberative processes and the review of international commitments.

At its third session, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues acknowledged these contributions and recommended that United Nations entities integrate the special concerns, priorities and contributions of indigenous women in all aspects of conflict prevention, peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction.

The governing bodies of the United Nations funds and programmes and other multilateral organizations, including the Bretton Woods institutions and international financial institutions, are invited to contribute to the implementation of the Programme of Action and to integrate it into their work programmes, as appropriate and in accordance with their respective mandates.

The Committee recommends that the State party take additional measures to eliminate stereotypes on Afro-descendent and indigenous people through awarenessraising campaigns; pursue the promotion of their cultural identity, in particular by including in the school curricula the contribution of those people in the shaping of the identity and culture of the State party; and allocate funds to preserve and promote their identity and culture, including in the media.

The Council should therefore stress that women’s contributions need to be integrated into dialogue efforts, pointing to the vital role women can play in re-establishing post-conflict societies, fostering tolerance and building sustainable peace.

The Executive Board may wish to: (a) take note of the significant contributions made by UNOPS to the operational results of the United Nations and its partners over the 2010-2011 biennium, and of the management results achieved in the same period; and (b) welcome the proposed focus for the execution of its strategic plan, 2010-2013.

The activities undertaken within this function will include: (a) producing country, regional and global-level technical and programme guidance covering the substantive areas in which UN-Women works, from ending violence against women to increasing women’s contributions to peace and security; (b) devising and coordinating multi-stakeholder, holistic country programmes that involve inter-agency participation and national partners in line with national and regional policies and priorities and that are consistent with UN-Women’s Strategic Plan; (c) ongoing, on-demand technical support to national partners and UNCTs in UN-Women’s core areas of work (e.g., support to NWMs; support to women’s organizations and networks; support to the Resident Coordinator and gender thematic groups; and support to reporting on and implementing CEDAW); and (d) the management and monitoring of global programmes and trust funds.

Marine science and its supporting technologies, through improving knowledge and applying it to management and decision-making, can make a major contribution to eliminating poverty; ensuring food security; supporting human economic activity; conserving the world’s marine environment; helping to predict, mitigate the effects of and respond to natural events and disasters; and generally promoting the use of the oceans and their resources for the objective of sustainable development (see A/56/121, para. 3).

While the contribution of fisheries has been declining over time, it still remains vital to the economy, as it is the main source of food and employment in a number of atolls.

The following elements of quality education were highlighted: focus on assistance in curricula review and revision, particularly the introduction of values education and ethical approaches, in accordance with national priorities and Arab needs; “learner-centred” education; improvement of teaching including capacity-building and teacher training; improvement in the status of teachers; development of benchmarking and assessment; elaboration of national standards regarding quality education.

The majority of recommendations had been identified as constructive and target-oriented, and many of the recommended measures had already been incorporated in plans of action and were at different stages of implementation.

The Chairperson suggested that there were several ways in which the Commission could contribute: (a) by requesting, once more, that the Chairperson of the Commission make a statement at the annual ministerial review to highlight the contributions of population and development issues to the implementation of the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to global public health; (b) by inviting the President of the Council to address the Commission under item 6 of its agenda for the forty-second session in order to launch a discussion on the relevance of population issues to the attainment of the goals and commitments on global public health; and (c) by requesting the Secretariat to look into the possibility of organizing a side-event at the time of the annual ministerial review that would highlight the interrelations between population issues and global health.

UNESCO Venice Office contributed to the identification of the key activities to be carried out within the MDG-F joint programme “Sustainable Tourism and Rural Development”, in relation with the UNESCO designated sites included in the areas selected by the project component to be implemented by UNWTO (tourism related to World Heritage Sites and biosphere reserves).

The States members of the Organization of American States (OAS) adopted resolution AG/RES. 2533 (XL-O/10) entitled “Disarmament and non-proliferation in the hemisphere”, bearing in mind the determination of the international community to promote and adopt specific measures to foster a culture of peace and non-violence in all countries of the world and the significant contribution that disarmament and non-proliferation education can make in adopting such measures, and recalling that, in the Declaration on Security in the Americas, the States reaffirmed their commitment to arms control, disarmament, and the non-proliferation of all weapons of mass destruction.

In a region facing important social movement and changes, the Forum provided an innovative space to develop a new kind of dialogue, bringing together social sciences and policy in the search for a common understanding and a common commitment to enhance their contribution to social transformations.

In follow-up to the recommendations of the Working Group, approved by the Security Council, and subject to and consistent with applicable international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, including Security Council resolution 1612 (2005) and 1882 (2009), I am entrusted, in my capacity as Chair of the Working Group, to commend the efforts undertaken by your Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in coordination with the Government of Sri Lanka to contribute actively to the protection of children.
