I should be grateful if the present letter and its enclosures could be circulated as a document of the General Assembly under agenda item 45, Question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).

At the same meeting, the seminar heard statements by the representatives of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas),c Gibraltar and the Frente Polisario.

Further statements were made by the representatives of Frente Polisario, Algeria, Morocco and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)c .

The illegitimate occupation by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland led to the adoption by the General Assembly of resolutions 2065 (XX), 3160 (XXVIII), 31/49, 37/9, 38/12, 39/6, 40/21, 41/40, 42/19 and 43/25, in which it recognizes the existence of a sovereignty dispute regarding the “Question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)” and urges the Governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island to resume negotiations in order to find as soon as possible a peaceful and lasting solution to the dispute.

At the 9th and 10th meetings of the Special Committee the representatives of Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Mali, Paraguay, Peru, the Russian Federation, Sierra Leone, the Syrian Arab Republic, Saint Lucia, Tunisia, Uruguay and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela also made statements on the question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).

At the 9th and 10th meetings of the Special Committee, the representatives of Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Brazil, China, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Mali, Mexico (as host country of the first Latin American and Caribbean Unity Summit), Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, the Russian Federation, Sierra Leone, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, Uruguay (on behalf of the States members of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and associated States) and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) also made statements on the question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).

The Special Committee considered the question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) at its 4th and 5th meetings, on 14 and 15 June 2012.

In 2011, LAN Airlines continued to provide a regular weekly service between Punta Arenas, Chile, and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), including two monthly stopovers in Río Gallegos, Argentina, in accordance with the provisions of the Joint Statement of 14 July 1999 between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

At the same meeting, the seminar heard statements by the representatives of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)c and the Frente Popular para la Liberación de Saguía el-Hamra y de Río de Oro (Frente Polisario).

Accordingly, it is proposed that 1 general temporary assistance position of Child Protection Adviser at the P-4 level be continued in order to ensure the integration of the protection, rights and well-being of children affected by armed conflict into all aspects of peacekeeping policies and programmes at the Headquarters level.

(Argentina), reiterating her Government’s firm support for the principle of selfdetermination, observed that the draft resolution just adopted must be interpreted and applied in accordance with the relevant resolutions that the General Assembly and the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples had adopted on the special question of the Malvinas Islands (Falklands), in particular General Assembly resolution 2065 (XX), which had recognized that the sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom could be resolved only by the resumption of bilateral negotiations on a solution acceptable to the people of the Islands.
