The main objective of the Workshop was to provide a forum to highlight recent scientific and technical results in order to (a) develop the basic science of heliophysics (the connections between the Earth, the Sun and inter-planetary space) through cross-disciplinary studies of universal processes; (b) determine the response of terrestrial and planetary magnetospheres and atmospheres to external drivers; (c) promote research on the Sun-heliosphere system outward to the local interstellar medium; (d) foster international scientific cooperation in the study of heliophysical phenomena now and in the future; (e) preserve the history and legacy of the International Geophysical Year on its fiftieth anniversary; and (f) communicate unique results of the International Heliophysical Year to the scientific community and the general public.

The view was expressed that research under the Initiative had to be a globally concerted effort, given that it would ultimately contribute to the understanding of the conditions on the Sun and of the solar wind, the magnetosphere, the ionosphere and the thermosphere that could influence the performance and reliability of spaceborne and ground-based technological systems and could endanger human life or health.

Multicontinental International Heliophysical Year arrays would provide an excellent basis for meso- and global-scale monitoring of magnetospheric-ionospheric disturbances and would provide scientific targets for middle and low latitudes and opportunities for developing countries to host instruments and participate in the scientific investigations.

Space weather refers to natural processes in space, such as magnetospheric disturbances and solar events, that can affect the near-Earth environment and have adverse impacts on space systems and space activities in general.

In addition, Tajikistan reported that it is preparing to conduct a needs assessment of landmine and other ERW victims in mine affected districts with the main goal being to establish a functional victim information system (VIS), which would comply with the Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA) standards and become a systematic and reliable mechanism at the district and oblast level.

In addition, greater efforts must be made to generate a global strategy to prioritise and mainstream the development dimension into global processes, and in the relevant multilateral institutions in order to enable developing countries to benefit from the opportunities offered by globalisation and trade liberalisation, including through the creation of an enabling external economic environment for development which requires greater coherence between the international trading, monetary and financial systems that should be universal, open, equitable, non-coercive, rule-based, predictable and non-discriminatory.

Researchers, industry experts and government agencies recognize that the most common environmental impacts of renewable energy technologies may include reduction of the velocity of marine currents and decrease in the heights of waves resulting from extraction of wave or tidal energy; alteration of benthic habitats and sediment transport or deposition by the construction activities and the continuous presence of marine renewable energy devices; killings or change in the behaviour of fish and mammals from noise and electromagnetic fields; interference with the movement, feeding, spawning and migration paths of fish, mammals and birds, which may get hurt or entangled or may be attracted or hauled out; and release of toxic chemicals as a result of accidental spills and leaks or the accumulation of metals or organic compounds.

For Canada, those covered the terminal phase-out management plan for ODS in the refrigeration and air-conditioning sector in Saint Lucia and the terminal phase-out management plan for Annex A Group I substances in Uruguay; for Italy, the umbrella project for terminal phase-out of ODS in the solvent sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the phase-out of methyl bromide as a soil fumigant in Morocco, and the terminal CTC phase-out project in Serbia; and for Spain, the phase-out of methyl bromide in horticulture in Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.
