Through its network of botanical gardens, state-of-the-art research and horticulture complexes, and living and resource collections, the organization’s purposes are to: (a) establish, develop, operate and maintain an educational and scientific centre with libraries, herbaria, laboratories and museums to encourage and conduct research in basic and applied tropical botany; (b) foster and encourage fundamental research in tropical plant life and study the uses of tropical flora in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, medicine and other sciences; (c) share knowledge acquired relative to basic and applied tropical botany through publications and other media; (d) collect and cultivate tropical flora and to preserve species of tropical plant life threatened with extinction; and (e) provide a facility which contributes to education, instruction, and recreation.

Delegates agreed that various successful agricultural practices – including restoration of degraded lands, sound management of grazing lands, improved crop cultivation, improved agriculture water management, best practices in aquaculture and agroforestry and development of biogas – can contribute to both adaptation and mitigation objectives.

(6) To acquire, develop, manage, license, hire, let, sell, exchange and otherwise howsoever turn to account any land and/or building and, in particular, by laying out and preparing the same for building purposes, constructing, altering, demolishing, pulling down, decorating, administering, maintaining, furnishing, fitting up, and improving buildings of all kinds, and by planting, paving, draining, farming, cultivating, letting on building lease or building agreement or for sale, and by advancing money to and entering into contracts and arrangement of all kinds with builders, tenants and others in connection with any of the foregoing.

Twelve species: mainly in North America (United States, Baja California in Mexico) and Asia from the Himalayas to Japan (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Japan, Kashmir, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam), one species in SE Europe (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, former Yugoslavia); four species (one endemic, two introduced) in China.

The issues examined under sub-theme 1.1 included the impact of sustainable soil and land management and agricultural practices on agricultural productivity (yields, crop failure), including the impact of crop biodiversity on yields; advances in sustainable land management practices; and changing paradigms for staple crops, in particular the system of rice intensification.

From an ecosystem services perspective, large-scale intensive monocultures are often a less attractive land-use option, despite their short term revenue stream.

(4) To develop and turn to account any land acquired by or in which the Company is interested, and in particular by laying out and preparing the same for building purposes, constructing, altering, pulling down, decorating, maintaining, furnishing, fitting up, and improving buildings, and by planting, paving, draining, farming, cultivating, letting on building lease or building agreement and by advancing money to and entering into contracts and arrangement of all kinds with builders, tenants and others.

His first stop at the centre was the kitchen, where half a dozen women dressed in colorful traditional outfits were busy chopping vegetables they had grown in nearby fields.

Upon enquiry, the Advisory Committee was informed that in 2011/12, a total of 6,584 tree seedlings had been planted and that the tree seedling campaign had increased the incomes of local communities involved in the production of tree seedlings; increased the vegetation cover needed to combat desertification; reduced the amount of solid waste disposed in dump sites by utilizing empty juice boxes to plant seedlings; and created further opportunities for synergy among United Nations organizations undertaking similar environmental activities; and that the planted trees had contributed to the uptake of carbon dioxide emitted by the activities of UNAMID.

The development of the papaya cultivar in Brazil, for example, with its new characteristics of being sea-freighted to Europe has undermined Ghana’s prior cost advantage in air-freighted papayas to Europe.

Information regarding differences in the physiological performance of plants and the lack of cost-effectiveness of soilless systems were identified by the Committee as potential issues of concern for strawberry runner systems moving to soilless production.

With a view to ensuring food security through sustainable agriculture, in 2009 the secretariat, through the United Nations Asian and Pacific Centre for Agricultural Engineering and Machinery (UNAPCAEM), launched a project on the theme “Understanding hybrid rice cultivation technology for food security in the Asia-Pacific region through South-South cooperation” to help member countries to address issues relating to food insecurity through the transfer of agricultural technology, the dissemination of knowledge and skills and the enhancement of member countries’ capacity in grain production and agricultural research and development.

The lemon thyme extract used by Clarins Laboratories is obtained from organic cultivation.

The party, however, could not accept the recommendation of the Methyl Bromide Technical Options Committee that it switch in the near future to soilless cultivation of strawberry runners, as that would mean a large change to production methods not yet proven in Canada, presenting significant technical challenges, adding greatly to costs and causing market disruption.

Landrace: A crop cultivar or animal breed that evolved with and has been genetically improved by traditional agriculturalists, but has not been influenced by modern breeding practices.

The Riverpark farming urbanites harvest and grow crops in its unconventional space using ORE Design and Technology. ready-made, cubic-foot milk crates are double-stacked and serve as individual planters.

The following activities were carried out under the first tranche: melon farmers took part in a study tour to Mexico on application of grafting in melon and watermelon (March 2011); assistance and support to PAO to implement chemical alternatives (September 2011); preparation of the terms of reference to purchase laboratory equipment as part of the implementation of the biological control programme for Fruta Mundial (July 2011).

Domestically, Myanmar had been implementing market-oriented policies to promote economic growth and development, focusing on the promotion of the agriculture sector in order to foster rural development and food security, in particular through paddy cultivation.

One possible explanation for that could be that individual farmers tended to produce cannabis herb on a larger scale in Africa, with the economy of scale allowing for a more pronounced disparity between wholesale and retail prices (see figure I).

Based on the needs of participating countries, hybrid rice experts will be sent to agricultural research institutes in individual participating countries to advise local trainers on how to adapt hybrid rice cultivation technology to local conditions and monitor the training of local farmers, addressing their concerns through participatory engagement.

For all new PRH estates, we aim to increase the greening ratio to at least 20% by providing planting at grade and slope areas, installing grass-paving systems in areas with less traffic, providing green roofs or green decking to low-rise structures, and piloting vertical greening.

Key aspects of the programme include the adoption of integrated pest management strategies, the acquisition of germplasm (planting material) and the establishment of a germplasm bank of both imported and local cultivars.
