South-South cooperation will be crucially important for the future of LDCs, but developing countries need to contribute according to their common aims but differentiated responsibilities.

We, the Heads of Arab States and Governments who, on 19 January 2011, are gathered together in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh at the second session of the Arab Economic, Development and Social Summit, hereby renew our complete commitment to the development strategies that were approved at the Kuwait Summit on 19 and 20 January 2009, and affirm that we will advance the human, economic, social and technological development of our Arab societies and will activate and develop our joint Arab action mechanisms, under the aegis of the League of Arab States, with a view to ensuring a better future for our peoples and for future generations.

Among the recommendations were that UNRWA must: impress upon donors that its core budget was not an administrative black hole but the key to running its educational programmes and thus should be seen as an investment in the future of the Palestine refugees; exploit all funding opportunities; enlarge its donor base for the core budget, to which only a small number currently contributed — a point to which he had drawn attention in Cairo at a meeting of Arab League ministers whose countries gave welcome support to specific projects and emergency appeals but not to the core budget; expand its partnerships with non-State actors such as foundations and other institutions in the private sector; and continue to be cost-effective in conducting its programmes through better planning, implementation and oversight.

At its substantive session of 2011, the Economic and Social Council decided to request the Secretary-General to prepare a note containing recommendations on the periodicity and scope of future reports on the role of the Council in the integrated and coordinated implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of major United Nations conferences and summits, in the light of relevant General Assembly resolutions, including resolution 61/16, for consideration at its substantive session of 2012 (Economic and Social Council decision 2011/216).

They have opened up new lines of enquiry and experimentation on the future of culture, including the written word, crafts and design, entailing a review of approaches to arts education and to the extension of the contribution of arts and creativity to cultural recovery in post-conflict and post-disaster countries.

The future role of external offices is subject to ongoing consultation process with Member States.

Rio+20 must provide the road map to the future we want — a future with peace, dynamic economic and social development, universal social well-being and a healthy and equitable environment for present and future generations, where women and men, boys and girls, equally contribute to and benefit from development.

The representative of UNFPA indicated that the sixth Asian and Pacific Population Conference would be an important opportunity for Asian and Pacific countries to shape the future of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development beyond 2014 and to ensure that population dynamics were fully integrated into the post-2015 development agenda.

A set of flagship publications have been planned with regional lens, which include (i) The Arab Region 2025, which will forecast and analyse current and future trends for the region in economic, social, political and cultural areas; (ii) Transitions to Democracy, which looks into the nature of political changes in Arab countries and analyses the lessons learned from political transitions in other areas of the world to draw conclusions and best practices on the policy options available to ensure effective and sustainable transitions to democracy; (iii) Arab Regional Integration, which analyses the potential areas and characteristics of integration be they social, economic, cultural or political and assessing their prospective impact on the long-term development of the region; and (iv) a joint publication with other Regional Commissions on Beyond the MDGs: A Future United Nations Development Agenda.

As we reflect on the historic achievement of the parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in holding a peaceful and credible Southern Sudan referendum, all the people of the Sudan can be assured of the commitment of the United Kingdom to support them in building a peaceful and prosperous future.

A requirement of economic loss might unnecessarily limit the scope of the draft articles, by, for example, precluding them from also dealing with activities designed to mitigate potential future human loss arising from existing environmental damage.

I also look forward to the innovations that adopting Ethernet will make possible; we will soon be able to remove the need for additional I/O cards as Ethernet gives us a solid foundation for future developments.

These organisations and departments will take note of the number of retirees each year and the trend of wastage in future, and make an assessment on the future service demand having regard to such factors as population ageing, demographic changes and the special needs of the community for particular areas of services.

Facilitate and ensure greater and more meaningful participation of civil society groups in CFS and other FAO processes, and allocate resources for these processes and greater inclusion in future dialogues and processes as full participants and not merely observers.

A second direction for new initiatives will probably be found in outreach for raising awareness among the general public on the potential of our planet for future generations and to encourage young people to learn more about our home planet, its powers, its beauty and its challenges.

(b) To request the Council of Arab Ministers of Water to expedite completion of the strategy for water security in the Arab region, in order to meet challenges and future requirements for sustainable development, and to submit that strategy to the Economic and Social Council for presentation to the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit.
