Malaria, ARI and malnutrition and diarrhoeal diseases are important causes of infant mortality in The Gambia.

For instance, there is a belief among mothers that fat or oil can cause diarrhoea, so we specifically encourage them to use it when preparing food.

Oysters, mussels, clams, scallops and other bivalve species are grown with food materials that occur naturally in their culture environment in the sea and lagoons.

(b) The major causes of child mortality are preventable and treatable diseases such as malaria, respiratory illnesses, diarrhoea and vaccine-preventable diseases

(a) Scaling up efforts to achieve integrated management of childhood illnesses, particularly actions to address and prevent the main causes of child mortality, including newborn and infant mortality, these being, inter alia, pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria and malnutrition.

Diarrhoeal diseases are responsible for the deaths of 2,800 persons each year, most of them young children.

In addition to severe pain just before, during or after menstruation, other symptoms of dysmenorrhea include cramps or pain in the lower abdomen or lower back, a pulling feeling in the inner thighs, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches and dizziness.

With regard to the implementation of the National Cholera prophylaxis and fight Programme and of other serious diarrhoea diseases (SDD) fro years 2003–2010, approved by means of Government Decision No. 277 from 13.03.2003, training courses have been organised on the supervision of the quality of the drinking water and the diseases with water transmission capabilities.

The Committee is concerned that, partly due to an unequal distribution of wealth, a considerable number of families live at risk of poverty and that a considerable proportion of the population does not have access to safe drinking water and adequate water sanitation, in particular in rural areas, which allegedly have been the direct and indirect cause for a number of diseases, including diarrhoea, hepatitis А, dysentery, methemoglobinemia by bottle-fed babies, poliomyelitis, and enteric fever.

Delegations also called for continuing support to humanitarian efforts in the Horn of Africa, to reducing under-five mortality, particularly through combating measles, malaria and diarrhoea, to assisting children in extreme circumstances and post-conflict situations, to assisting marginalized youth, and to the protection of children and women, especially in middle-income countries.

Therefore, it should be alerted for middle aged people or above with symptoms as follow, which could be colon cancer: change of habit of bowel movement over a short period of time, such as diarrhea,  constipation, or unsmooth bowel movement, persistent abdominal discomfort, vague pain or bloating; loose stool, the presence of blood or mucus in stool; repeated positive in occult blood test; unidentified anemia, week or weight loss, mass palpable in abdomen.
