Members of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament participated in the third session of the Preparatory Committee and the 2010 NPT Review Conference, some as members of their Government delegations and others as independent observers, at which they organized a number of educational forums, including a panel on the theme “Advancing nuclear disarmament: the power of parliaments”, featuring Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Moreover, we welcome the timely mission undertaken by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the region, where he is conducting a series of meetings with leaders in the region aimed at promoting respect for Security Council resolution 1860 (2009), including securing an immediate ceasefire between the parties and intensifying efforts to provide the necessary arrangements and guarantees to sustain such a ceasefire.

At the second plenary meeting of the 2011 session on 26 January, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, delivered an important message (CD/PV.1199) in which he, inter alia, reflected on the accomplishments of the Conference as the world’s single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum, its role and its function, and suggested options that could be explored to break the longstanding deadlock and to start substantive work, including through the adoption by consensus of a programme of work, early in the 2011 session.
