Here, the town’s four-storey red sandstone Curfew Tower, built “to imprison idlers and rioters” is surrounded by pretty buildings and some convivial watering-holes.

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 65/248, it is proposed that 10 posts be abolished (1 Human Resources Officer (P-4), 2 Human Resources Officer (P-3) and 1 Welfare Assistant (Field Service) in the Civilian Personnel Section; 1 Procurement Assistant (Field Service) and 1 Administrative Assistant (Field Service) in the Procurement Section; 1 HIV/AIDS Counsellor (NationalOfficer)in the HIV/AIDS Unit; 1 Finance Assistant (national General Service) in the Finance Section; and 2 Facilities Management Assistant (national General Service) in the General Services Section); and that 1 Field Service post (1 Contracts Management Assistant in the Contracts Management Section) be converted to a national General Service post.

The range of support will comprise all support services, including the implementation of conduct and discipline and HIV/AIDS programmes, personneladministration, health care, maintenance and construction of officeand accommodation facilities, communications and information technology, air and surface transport operations, with the inclusion of round-the-clock search-and-rescue/aeromedical evacuation capability, supply and resupply operations and the provision of security services Mission-wide.

The range of support included the implementation of conduct and discipline and HIV/AIDS programmes, personnel and financial administration, health care, maintenance and construction of office and accommodation facilities, communications and information technology, and air and surface transport operations, with the inclusion of search-and-rescue/aeromedical evacuation capability.

In the context of reducing maternal, infant and child mortality, and combating HIV/AIDS in particular, the Office, in conjunction with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Mauritania, has helped to improve interaction with young people about AIDS through the regional youth associations network of Wilaya in Nouakchott.

The proposed conversion of the post of HIV/AIDS Associate Officer is in line with the request of the General Assembly to make greater use of national staff for positions that could contribute to national capacity-building and where knowledge of national culture and systems is an added value and also in line with the Operation’s policy to replace international posts with national posts where this would otherwise facilitate implementation of the Operation’s mandate.

It is noteworthy that programmes implemented by the Officein the area education focused on the following strategic areas of support, all directly responding to strategies and results contained in Kenya Education Sector Support Programme (KESSP), the education sector’s plan to materialize Vision 2030: strengthening the planning, monitoring and evaluation of the education system through EMIS; enhancing the education sector responses to HIV and AIDS; improving the quality of education for peace programme; and strengthening literacy development through advocacy and technical support to strategic planning.
