UNESCO’s commitment to promoting cultural diversity is in keeping with its specific mandate within the United Nations system, and with the work it has been carrying on for nearly 60 years “with a view to preserving … the fruitful diversity of the cultures” and in order to “recommend such international agreements as may be necessary to promote the free flow of ideas by word and image” (UNESCO Constitution).

Though I do not expect to witness the emergence of a democratic China with my own eyes, I can only spur myself to struggle unswervingly for this arrival of democracy in China, and I am convinced that a democratic China will emerge some day, no matter how long it may have to take.

Those principles have preserved the same solidarity and continuity over time in the relations between Mexico and Cuba, two States that have maintained steadfast historical ties in an atmosphere of renewed trust and unfailingly following the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

States should guarantee that all officials in the juvenile justice system, including law enforcement officials, prosecutors and judges, as well as community-based justice providers, including religious and traditional leaders, are trained on children’s rights and supported in the implementation of these rights and standards related to juvenile justice.

Through its Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency Thailand hopes that the ASEAN Earth observation satellite may not only serve the region but may also act as the regional node to support other developing regions that share similar constraints in space-based technology.

In 2007/08, UNIFIL increased its efforts to support civil society, including the implementation of projects aimed at empowering and training young people in order to improve the understanding of the Force’s mandate and activities, the rehabilitation of a community centre run by a steering committee composed of local non-governmental organizations and the municipality, and the establishment of a “multicultural” centre which will host activities on capacity-building and gender mainstream awareness.

Some speakers noted that the use of illicit substances by women and girls was underreported and that the health and social consequences of drug use and dependence for women and girls, their families and the community required special consideration and treatment and care services.

Capture production of mussels and oysters, for which reporting countries often have difficulty in separating harvest of natural populations from aquaculture production, has not varied much over the years, but an overall downward trend can be noted.

They are part of an unbroken line of Americans that stretches back to our founding; Americans of all faiths who have served and sacrificed to extend the promise of America to new generations, and to ensure that what is exceptional about America is protected — our commitment to stay true to our core values, and our ability slowly but surely to perfect our union.

Last but not least, delivering protection requires sustained commitment, including through stable funding, to enable the development and implementation of myriad protection responses and the pursuit of solutions.

Finally, the Government of Peru considers that the elimination of such unilateral and extraterritorial measures is consistent with its firm and unchanging commitment to the common objectives in the areas of representative democracy, the exercise of human rights and economic freedom.

I conclude by extending my gratitude to the long-standing partners of the United Nations in Kosovo — the European Union, NATO and OSCE — as well as to the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, for their essential support and close cooperation with UNMIK.

Therefore, the Legion of Good Will acknowledges schools and other educational environments, such as its community centres and means of communication, as privileged loci to intervene against the social factors contributing to poverty and violence, supporting the idea that other public and private institutions also commit themselves to this same role in their communities, becoming radiating centres of equality and social justice.

The Committee further recommends that the State party raise awareness of the principle of the best interest of the child among professionals working with children such as teachers, judges and social workers, traditional and community leaders and in the community at large, including children, through radio, television and newspaper campaigns.
