At its sixty-third session, the General Assembly took note of the appointment by the Secretary-General of a new Coordinator for Multilingualism; requested the Secretary-General to ensure equal treatment for all language services and effective multilingual communication among representatives of Member States, including through simultaneous distribution of documents in all official languages; requested the Department of Public Information to improve actions taken to achieve parity among the six official languages on the United Nations website; and requested the Secretary-General to submit to it at its sixty-fifth session a comprehensive report on the full implementation of its resolutions on multilingualism (resolution 63/306).

The National Institute for Youth (INJ) has produced a preliminary draft of a national policy on youth containing seven basic lines of action for young people in various forums and workshops, namely empowerment of young people in participatory democratic processes, universal access to the knowledge society, digital inclusion and multilingual communication, popular culture, sport and recreation as a strategy for social inclusion and development, economic rights of young people through decent work and rural development, all-round health and a healthy lifestyle, social protection from violence and justice as a basis of a culture of peace.

Any sanctions decision should be made after consultation with SADC that in turn should lead to more effective, ongoing channels of communication with it.

Stakeholder engagement would be issue-based and would be channelled through work programmes, and may require the establishment of institutional interfaces and communication channels at different levels, which would allow the TEC to mobilize and leverage a wider range of expertise and resources.

At its substantive session of 2010, the Council, in its resolution 2010/38, requested the President of the Council to convene the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Informatics for one more year to enable it to carry out, from within existing resources, the due fulfilment of the provisions of the Council resolutions on the item, to facilitate the successful implementation of the initiatives being taken by the Secretary-General with regard to the use of information technology and to continue the implementation of measures required to achieve its objectives, and in that regard requested the Working Group to continue its efforts to act as a bridge between the evolving needs of Member States and the actions of the Secretariat, and also requests the Working Group to consider its future role, status and mandate and develop findings in that regard.

Its functions include: protecting families; promoting family cohesion; safeguarding family identity and family values; improving families’ living standards from all points of view; strengthening the role of the family in the development process bypromoting communication between families and governmental and other national institutions that are involved in family issues; cooperating with Arab and international organizations on family issues in order to meet development objectives; and proposing amendments to legislation on the family.

On the basis of the review, key improvements will be made, covering such priority areas as financial and budgetary management; reporting and auditing, including a solid internal control framework with the highest standards of transparency and resource utilization reflecting global best practices in those areas; strengthened internal governance structures that maximize synergies; communication and knowledge-sharing, both for internal purposes and as a basis forcommunicating and sharing knowledge outside of UN-Women; and staff capacity for the UN-Women mandate, including enhanced capacity for coordination within the United Nations system as a priority and measures to improve both functional and geographical staff mobility.

At the same time, we require schools to establish a structured mechanism to keep parents informed of their children’s progress in school and to involve them in the development and implementation of support plans for their children.

A concise and standardized definition of indicators for outputs and outcomes would facilitate the understanding of problems, reduce the time of drafting reports, improve communication, increase the meaningfulness of reporting, and allow for comparison among various experiences.

This is positive for a number of reasons: firstly the scale and speed ofcommunication, to a degree, creates accountability – it is harder now to get away with atrocities unnoticed; secondly, it enables us to communicate without having to travel, reducing our impact on the environment; thirdly, it has the potential to dispel the ignorance and misunderstanding that we might have about other cultures – this is key to our survival’.

To complement national efforts, there is a need for the relevant international and regional institutions, as well as appropriate institutions in source countries, to increase their support for private foreign investment in infrastructure development and other priority areas, including projects to bridge the digital divide in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
