Outbreaks of dysentery are common in people living in over-crowded institutions.

Let us make no mistake — NCDs are as much a threat to our region as AIDS, malaria and dysentery are in other parts of the developing world.

Development of water and sanitation systems in rural and urban areas would alleviate poverty, contribute to overall food security, assure health benefits for the general population (eradication of diarrhoea diseases), free the girl child for attendance in school, and women for more sustainable activity (education, jobs, community involvement towards protection and management of the water/sanitation system, etc.), and assist in achieving environmental sustainability.

The organization actively participates in several meetings hosted by United Nations organizations, including: the WHO Stop Tuberculosis meetings in 2008 and 2009; the Roll Back Malaria implementer’s meeting in 2009; the WHO meeting on non-communicable diseases in 2009; meetings with UNICEF to develop new policies and recommendations with members of the Zinc Task Force (for the management of diarrhoea in low-income countries); meetings of the UNICEF working group on a comprehensive communications strategy and a framework for pneumonia and diarrhoea control; and in a UNDP meeting on implementers of programmes of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in 2008.

Dysentery caused by ameba needs to be treated with different kinds of drugs.

This is the case for tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, and diarrhoeal disease.

Due to the poverty reduction programme, the rights to health care, access to basic social services, clean water and better nutrition have contributed to the decline in infant mortality from diarrheal diseases and a decline in malnutrition among children under the age of 5.

Dysentery is transmitted directly by fecal material of a patient/carrier or indirectly through contaminated food and water.

The Committee is concerned that, partly due to an unequal distribution of wealth, a considerable number of families live at risk of poverty and that a considerable proportion of the population does not have access to safe drinking water and adequate water sanitation, in particular in rural areas, which allegedly have been the direct and indirect cause for a number of diseases, including diarrhoea, hepatitis А, dysentery, methemoglobinemia by bottle-fed babies, poliomyelitis, and enteric fever.

Unsafe water and lack of access to sanitation are a primary cause of diarrhoeal diseases linked to high levels of child and infant mortality among families living in poverty and restrict the enjoyment of many other rights, including those to health, education, work and privacy, thereby seriously undermining the possibilities of escaping poverty.

A person who is capable and with time on his hands will always seek to make his own living rather than living on alms.

They also note the importance of monitoring the sanitation situation to prevent any possible outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera or diarrhoea.
